Fearfully and Wonderfully Made: 7 Biblical, Body Positive Affirmations for a Joyfully Nourished Life

From Body Dissatisfaction to Body Acceptance

If you’re anything like me, the thought of “loving” your body might cause bile to roil up in your stomach. However, it’s easier said than done. The body positive affirmations in our culture just don’t cut it for you.

Adopting today’s rhetoric of self-love and body confidence would be ingenuine for you. You wouldn’t exactly say that you hate your body. You just don’t wake up in the morning, look in the mirror and tell yourself “Well, hello gorgeous.”

Body dissatisfaction is very common and affects many women across the United States. One recent cohort study approximates that 50% of women experience body image dissatisfaction (1). And this statistic doesn’t tell the whole story.

For instance, young women and teens often experience body dissatisfaction to a heightened degree because of access to and use of social media. Many resort to restrictive dieting for weight loss and disordered eating patterns that may be dangerous or even deadly (2).

If this describes you and you are ready to escape the hamster wheel of dieting for good, please keep reading. There is an answer to your body dissatisfaction.

Biblical Body Acceptance

Wait a minute…how do you even begin to find contentment when it comes to your (physical) human condition? After all, you have no choice over the type of body you are born into.

No matter how you choose to manipulate it (which is a topic for another blog post), the body you have is the one you live with for the rest of your life.

Sounds like a huge bummer, right? Well, it actually isn’t.

The good news is this: no matter what body weight, type, shape, or size you have, you also have a Creator and Heavenly Father who loves you unconditionally and knows your worth goes far beyond any of your physical attributes.

Just let that sink in for a few seconds. Read it again and again if you need to.

And as great as the Body Positivity and Health At Every Size movements are, they simply aren’t enough to get you through the darkest hour when you feel utterly hopeless and alone in your struggles with food, your health, and your body.

That is why I want to share a unique, counter-cultural perspective that is proven to bring true and lasting food freedom, peace with your body, and a joy-filled healthy lifestyle. And it starts with biblical body acceptance.

The core of biblical body acceptance is this: it’s the realization that while you may not always like your body and how it looks/feels/functions, you are 100% loved and accepted as you are, which then empowers you to begin the journey to love and accept your physical self and all its parts.

7 Biblical Body Positive Affirmations

If you have a hard time believing the above statement, it’s okay. It is normal to resist the truth when you have believed lies for so long.

Lies like “you’re too fat” or “you’re too skinny.” Lies like “I need to go on a diet and punish myself to achieve the body I want.” These lies stem from diet culture and I talk a lot more about this in my blog post here.

These are the lies that convince us that if we don’t have what society considers the “perfect body”, we aren’t as important or valuable as others who do (which is another lie because the “perfect body” doesn’t exist!).

But I challenge you to start believing the truth about yourself, here and now. Here are 7 biblical, body positive affirmations you can adopt TODAY:

1. You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalms 139:13-14).

If you need proof that our Creator made us to be gloriously unique and beautiful in His image, here ya go!

2. You have a glorious purpose (Ephesians 2:10).

Here is proof that your body is GOOD, no matter what size, shape, color, or level of ability/disability it has.

3. You are chosen (1 Peter 2:9).

Here is proof that you were CHOSEN to come out of the “darkness” of diet culture into the light of His path for you.

4. You are worth dying for (Romans 5:8).

Here is proof that God sent His Son Jesus Christ for YOU, especially when you are at your lowest point.

5. You are so valuable and precious (Matthew 6:26).

Here is proof that your worth and value are far greater than you could possibly know.

6. You are made to glorify God in every way (1 Corinthians 10:31).

Here is proof that everything we eat, drink, and do should have a higher purpose and intention than just “health and fitness.”

7. You are made to be FREE (John 8:36).

Here is proof that real food freedom and body acceptance are ONLY found in Jesus.

What do you feel when you read these statements? How would your life change if you knew that they were absolutely true?

I can tell you what you will experience: JOY.  Real joy that lasts and isn’t based on emotions or feelings, which change from day to day.

These truths are based on a Creator who never changes and isn’t swayed by the world’s trends, your feelings, or your failures. His love and compassion for you are boundless and will never run out. How freeing is that?!

So, the next time you look in the mirror, remind yourself that you are “fearfully and wonderfully made.” And while you may not love everything about your body, find joy in knowing that you are unconditionally accepted by the One who made you exactly as you are meant to be.
